Chipping Community Energy - Low Carbon Heat Network Project

A Great Start to 2023.

Technical Team – Prospus Group Ltd, Pure energy (REGen) Ltd, Lùths Services Ltd, ATB Drilling Ltd.

Borehole Completion and Thermal Response Testing for a Community Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) Network Array

The thermal response test measures the thermal conductivity of the on-site borehole location.

Following the Energy Assessment Survey completed during November 2022, the Chipping Community Energy Group together with Prospus Group Ltd secured funding approval to complete a test borehole within the grounds of Chipping and District Memorial Hall.

The purpose of completing the test borehole is to install a collector pipe loop to facilitate a thermal response test to confirm borehole geotechnical suitability and enable installation of a ground source heat pump. The pipework installed is subsequently capped and made available to be a part of the energy network.

ATB Drilling Ltd performed on-site drilling activities during January on behalf of Pure energy (REGen) Ltd, together with Lùths Services Ltd, and ably supported by our Graduate Energy Engineer, Yashodhara Bose to ensure the borehole drilling process was completed safely and on budget, with minimal disruption to residents.

A single borehole was drilled to 200 M total vertical depth (TVD) and a flow and pressure test were carried out successfully. The borehole was then grouted using geothermally enhanced material and capped on completion.

Environmental Compliance – Waste Materials Handling

All drilling related waste generated was filtered and transferred into a waste container for subsequent removal whilst produced water was reused during drilling activities.

Community Involvement

During drilling activity completion, students from The Brabins Endowed Primary School, along with parish residents visited the drilling site to learn more about the technology involved in drilling activities, forming the basis of the sustainable heat network solution proposed for the Parish. The drilling works was completed on 17th January, 2023.

The thermal response test equipment was subsequently connected to the vertical borehole on 8th February, 2023 and the full test was completed on 10th February, 2023.

Thermal Response Test conducted in February

Results generated from the thermal response test will assist in determining the thermal properties of the local rock area and will help facilitate borehole system design as well as the total vertical depth and number of boreholes required.

Pure energy exists to connect business and communities to a low cost, sustainable future, creating value from on-site assets. Collaboration to deliver on-site energy generation is a core strategy for our Company.

Many thanks to all involved within the Chipping Community Energy Group for your patience whilst the drilling and testing activities were being completed.
